New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Virginia lawmakers press makeup tools on gun control bill

NEW YORK — New York state lawmakers on Tuesday pressed gun control advocates to give them the option of pressing makeup brushes on the gun control legislation before it goes to the Governor’s desk for signature.
The bill was introduced by state Rep. Jim Banks, a Democrat, and passed the state Assembly on Tuesday by a vote of 68-38.
The legislation will now head to the desk of Gov.
“We will have the tools to make our voices heard, but we have to make them through the governor’s office,” Banks said in a statement.
“For the sake of our families and our communities, we have an obligation to do what’s right.
We have to get this done.”
New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut and Virginia have all already passed gun control bills that use makeup brushes.
Cuomo vetoed the legislation in June, saying he would not sign it without a makeup tool option.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Tuesday that he would use makeup to help persuade the Governor to sign the bill into law.
A similar bill from New Jersey state Rep and mayoral candidate Steve Lonegan failed to make it through the Assembly.
In June, the New York Times reported that Lonegan would have to use a makeup brush to make his plea to Cuomo.
On Tuesday, the Governor told reporters that he will sign the legislation.
He called it “a simple step toward strengthening the safety of New Yorkers.”
New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito said she had heard from constituents who had been concerned about makeup brushes, and said the governor should follow the lead of other states.
“We need to get makeup brushes and we need to go on this journey, and we have the resources to do it,” Mark-Ver said.
The New York Police Department, the state Attorney General’s office, the governor and New York’s Department of Health are also expected to weigh in on the issue, Mark-Kane said.
